Welcome
We are interested in the role of the microbiome in the animal health, in the spread of antibiotic resistance and in the applications of next-generation sequencing. We use a range of techniques and approaches including molecular genetics, microscopy, 16S rRNA sequencing, transcriptomics, metagenomics, comparative genomics and experimental evolution to learn more about these research fields.
We are currently funded by the USDA to use 16S rRNA gene sequencing to discover trout pathogens and to use comparative genomics to identify virulence factors in Aeromonas. We have funding from the NSF for evolving the symbionts of the medicinal leech to compete better against invasive bacteria. In addion we are part of collaborative NSF and NIH grants where we work on the evolution of genomes and the role of the human microbiome in children.
